Ayat Al-Kursi - The Throne Verse
This artwork presents Āyat al-Kursī in elegant Maghrebi calligraphy, framed within a classical Islamic illuminated border. Rich blues, reds, and gold draw upon the tradition of sacred manuscript illumination, where geometry and floral ornament serve to honour the Divine Word. The composition embodies reverence and harmony, allowing the sacred verse to rest within a luminous architectural frame of balance, devotion, and timeless beauty.
“Allah — there is no deity except Her, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Her nor sleep. To Her belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Her except by Her permission? She knows what lies before them and what lies behind them, and they encompass nothing of Her knowledge except what She wills. Her Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not weary Her. And She is the Most High, the Most Great.” Sūrat al-Baqarah (The Cow), 2:255
Curatorial Note:
The decision to render the English translation using feminine pronouns is an intentional artistic gesture. In Islamic theology, Allah transcends human categories of gender; the Divine is beyond biological or linguistic limitation. The use of “She” in this context does not seek to redefine doctrine, but to gently challenge inherited linguistic conventions and invite reflection on the boundless, encompassing nature of the Divine.
By shifting the pronoun, the work encourages viewers to reconsider how language shapes perception, and to engage more consciously with the idea that God, in essence, is beyond gender — beyond form — beyond limitation.
