The Andalusian Dream

This commissioned artwork reflects Maaida’s deep engagement with architecture, poetry, and cross cultural dialogue. Inspired by the sublime Alhambra, she draws from the intricate beauty of the Nasrid Palace to unite geometry, verse, and colour in an expression of enduring love.

At the heart of the painting, Maaida inscribes a Persian couplet by Rumi from his poem I’ve Come to Take You: “You are my life, and my soul—please be my last prayer, my heart must hold you forever.” Through this verse, she weaves devotion into ornament, allowing language and pattern to exist in harmonious dialogue.

Maaida further enriches the composition with a spectrum of shades inspired by Maghreb tilework found in Andalusia, layering the surface with warmth and depth. A delicate frame referencing a traditional Māori border surrounds the work, while flowing vines adorned with two eight pointed stars create movement and symbolic balance. Through this commissioned piece, Maaida bridges cultures and traditions, honouring love as both a poetic and visual language.
